Aamon is a powerful demon mentioned in several Western grimoires of ceremonial magic (in particular the Ars Goetia). He is the seventh demon in the hierarchy presented within this text, part of the broader collection, the Lesser Key of Solomon.

A powerful entity, Aamon is traditionally classified as a Marquis in the infernal peerage. It is described as commanding a vast number of demonic legions.

His domain of influence centers on matters of love, reconciling disputes, and granting foresight, particularly concerning the past and the future. The nature of his appearance, often depicted as a hybrid of several animals, shows his ancient and chthonic associations.

Description

Aamon is classified as a Marquis within the hierarchy of spirits detailed in the Ars Goetia, where he holds the seventh position among the seventy-two infernal entities King Solomon is said to have bound. His primary function, as described in these magical texts, is twofold.

Firstly, Aamon is a purveyor of knowledge, capable of revealing secrets of both the past and the future to the summoner. Secondly, his domain covers the complex and often volatile sphere of human emotion, particularly love and discord.

He is credited with the power to incite fierce passion in individuals and, conversely, to mediate and settle long-standing feuds and disputes, making him a potent but unpredictable figure for conjurers seeking control over human relationships and destiny.

Appearance

The description of Aamon’s physical form is one of the more bizarre and hard to ignore in the Goetic tradition, often presented with two distinct primary forms.

The most commonly cited appearance is that of a large, powerful wolf with a serpent’s tail. This wolf-like form is frequently depicted as wreathed in flames or as vomiting them from its mouth.

His alternate form is that of a man with the head of a raven or crow. This humanoid configuration maintains the bestial features of the black bird’s head atop a human body. This unusual duality—the snake-like wolf and the corvine man—accentuates his hybrid nature, possibly pointing to the syncretic origins of the demon.

The black raven or crow imagery is also often associated with dark omens and forbidden knowledge in various occult traditions.

History

Origins in the Goetia

Aamon’s primary textual origin lies in the Lesser Key of Solomon (Ars Goetia), a book compiled in the 17th century from earlier source materials. He is systematically listed as the seventh spirit, holding the rank of a Marquis.

The text describes him as a “Marquis Great and Mighty,” who rules over forty legions of spirits. His abilities, which include compelling love and revealing the past and future, establish him as a core functional demon within the Solomonic system of practical magic.

The text also states that the Archangel Raphael governs him, indicating the spirit’s submission to divine authority when properly invoked and bound by the magus.

Possible Egyptian Connection

Occult researchers and demonographers have often noted a strong potential link between the name Aamon (or Amon) and the ancient Egyptian supreme deity Amun (also spelled Amen or Ammon). This link is not definitively established in the Goetic texts, but it is a common theory. Amun was a powerful creator and solar god, often depicted with a ram’s head or wearing a headdress with two tall plumes.

During the demonization of many non-Abrahamic deities in the medieval and early modern periods, powerful pagan gods were often reinterpreted as infernal entities. The similarities in the names and the sheer power attributed to Aamon (commanding 40 legions) lend credence to the idea that the Goetic spirit may represent a corrupted, demonized echo of the great Egyptian god.

Further support for this association is sometimes drawn from the worship of Baal-Hamon (a name combining Baal and Amun) in Carthage, a deity also associated with a ram and solar attributes. If this connection holds, Aamon’s roots would extend back to the New Kingdom of Egypt (c. 16th to 11th century BCE).

Later Interpretations

Following the publication of the Ars Goetia, Aamon continued to be a fixture in subsequent grimoires and occult literature. He is found in works like Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1583) and Reginald Scot’s Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), often under the spelling Amon. While these texts sometimes present minor variations in his description or rank, his core function as a spirit of divination and relational manipulation remains constant.

In modern occultism and certain forms of ceremonial magic, Aamon is consistently approached as a formidable entity for operations involving divination, particularly scrying for past events, and for compelling others to love the summoner. His role in both starting and ending disagreements reinforces his nature as an influence over the flux of interpersonal relations.

Powers

Aamon’s capabilities are primarily focused on manipulating human affairs, understanding temporal events, and commanding a significant infernal force. His powers are practical for the ceremonial magician, granting influence over both the external world of relationships and the hidden world of time and knowledge. He is not a physical destroyer but an architect of psychological and emotional consequence.

The power to reveal the past and the future is a form of divination, granting the summoner a dangerous advantage by offering foresight that can be leveraged for destructive or manipulative ends. His ability to both incite love and reconcile disagreements allows him to insert himself directly into human social structures, creating or destroying bonds as his summoner directs.

All these functions, while seemingly varied, serve the overarching dark purpose of controlling and disrupting human life and destiny.

Aamon’s powers include:

  • Temporal Divination: Grants knowledge of all things past and future, allowing the summoner access to forbidden or secret information.
  • Emotional Manipulation: Has the power to procure love or incite passion, often in inappropriate or destructive contexts.
  • Controversy Control: Capable of both causing intense disagreements and reconciling deep-seated feuds between people, granting control over social harmony.
  • Legion Command: Rules over forty legions of lesser spirits, providing the summoner with a vast secondary pool of lesser entities to command.
