Aka Manah represents the abstract yet potent force of cognitive corruption. Within Zoroastrianism, the world is a battlefield between Truth (Asha) and the Lie (Druj).
This entity functions as the primary agent of the Lie by targeting the intellectual and moral center of human beings. It does not represent physical destruction, but rather the internal decay of purpose and the substitution of benevolent intent with malicious or selfish impulses.
Its existence is essential to the faith’s theological dualism, providing the necessary antithesis to the divine wisdom that leads to salvation. By clouding the mind, it prevents individuals from performing their duty to the Creator, thereby serving the ultimate goal of cosmic chaos.
Appearance
In traditional texts, Aka Manah is largely characterized by a lack of concrete physical form, emphasizing its nature as a mental parasite. When it is visualized in later iconographic interpretations or descriptions, it manifests as a shadowy, wispy essence that doesn’t have a definitive border, suggesting an invasive presence.
It is sometimes described as having a cold, greyish color, representing the leaching of color and life from the human soul. Its features are often obscured or portrayed as a hollow void where a face should be, symbolizing the lack of truth and the emptiness of the “Evil Mind.”
In rare anthropomorphic depictions, it appears as a gaunt, sickly creature with elongated fingers, poised as if whispering into its victim’s ear.
History
Origins
Aka Manah was brought into existence by Angra Mainyu, the Great Spirit of Darkness, specifically to serve as the shadow to the first and most powerful of the divine emanations, Vohu Manah.
In the void before the material world was solidified, Angra Mainyu saw the brilliance of the Amesha Spentas and sought to create a mirror of each, a council of Daevas that would ensure every virtue was met with a corresponding vice. Aka Manah was the first of these creations, born from the very essence of the Lie.
His purpose was defined from the moment of his inception: to ensure that no thought of the Creator could reach the hearts of mortals without being intercepted and twisted into a tool for destruction.

The Temptation of Zarathustra
One of the most significant narrative accounts involving Aka Manah occurs during the prophet Zarathustra’s spiritual trials. As the prophet sought to communicate the divine revelation of Ahura Mazda, Angra Mainyu sent his most subtle lieutenants to break the prophet’s resolve.
Unlike Aeshma, who brought fury, or the other Daevas who brought physical terror, Aka Manah crept into the quiet spaces of the prophet’s mind.
The demon attempted to convince Zarathustra that his mission was a delusion and that the path of righteousness was a burden without reward. He whispered of the ease of the old ways and the power that could be gained by embracing the Lie.
However, Zarathustra, fortified by his connection to Vohu Manah, recognized the cold, creeping apathy of the demon. By reciting the sacred words of the Gathas, the prophet created a shield of sound and truth that physically repelled the entity, forcing it to retreat back into the darkness of the north.
The Corruption of King Yima
In the folklore of the Golden Age, King Yima (Jamshid) ruled over a world without death or sickness. According to lore, Aka Manah watched the king’s success with growing envy. The demon did not attack the kingdom with armies; instead, he targeted Yima’s ego.
Slowly, Aka Manah began to feed the king thoughts of his own divinity, suggesting that the prosperity of the world was a result of Yima’s power alone, rather than a blessing from the Creator.
As the “Evil Mind” took hold, Yima’s speech became boastful and false. The moment the king uttered a lie, the Divine Glory (Khvarenah) departed from him in the shape of a bird. The kingdom fell into ruin, and Yima was eventually destroyed by the usurper Zahhak.
This story is the primary mythic example of how Aka Manah destroys from within, turning a perfect ruler into a vessel for the Lie.
The Final Conflict
Zoroastrian eschatology describes a final battle known as Frashokereti, in which the forces of light and darkness will meet for the last time.3 In this narrative, Aka Manah is destined to face his eternal rival, Vohu Manah. As the world is purged by molten metal, the Daevas will find their influence over the human mind shattered.
It is prophesied that Vohu Manah will seize Aka Manah and utterly vanquish him, unmaking the very concept of the “Evil Mind” and ensuring that for the rest of eternity, only Truth and Good Thought will remain in the consciousness of the living.

Aka Manah operates through cognitive interference. He does not physically assault his victims but instead vibrates at a frequency that mimics the victim’s own internal monologue.
By subtly shifting a person’s perception, he makes selfish or cruel actions appear rational and virtuous. His primary effect is the “clouding of the soul,” where a person becomes unable to distinguish between right and wrong, eventually leading to a state of spiritual paralysis or “Vile Apathy.”
When Aka Manah targets a mind, the result is often the sudden onset of spite or a desire for unprovoked vengeance. He is capable of suppressing the influence of the Amesha Spentas, effectively “muting” the conscience.
In a broader social context, he uses his powers to sow discord among allies by planting seeds of suspicion and misunderstanding. The release of his influence into a population results in the breakdown of social contracts, the rise of demagoguery, and the abandonment of truth in favor of convenient, malicious falsehoods.
