Description

Amy represents the meeting point between great intelligence and spiritual weakness. In the Solomonic tradition, he represents the idea of a ‘fallen’ intellect—knowledge that was once divine but is now accessible only through contact with spirits like him.

He is linked to the study of the liberal sciences, such as astronomy, logic, and rhetoric, and to finding hidden wealth. In goetic tradition, this often means uncovering secrets lost over time or hidden by magic. Amy is also known for his ongoing hope to return to the heavenly realm, showing the theme of a ‘hopeful’ fallen spirit.

Amy acts as a link for practitioners, helping them gain knowledge and material success by working with spiritual hierarchies.

Appearance

When first summoned, Amy appears as a shape made entirely of fire. In this form, he gives off intense heat and bright light, without any clear body or outline.

After some time, or when the conjurer commands, the demon changes into a human form. In this state, he looks like an ordinary man. The main detail in the sources is the change from fire to a normal human shape, with no special mention of his clothes or features.

History

Origins and the War in Heaven

Before the universe was fully formed, Amy was a high-ranking angelic being. He was part of both the Order of Angels and the Order of Potencies (Powers) at the same time.

In these roles, the demon had a lot of authority. He was responsible for maintaining natural laws and the boundary between the divine and the physical world. He was known for his intelligence and deep understanding of how the universe works, especially the movement of the stars and planets.

When the rebellion began in the heavens, Amy chose to follow the Morning Star. He did not act out of blind violence. Instead, he made a careful decision to change sides because he wanted independence. During the War in Heaven, Amy used his deep knowledge of the liberal sciences, which were then considered divine secrets, to help the rebels. As a member of the Potencies, he took part in spiritual battles against the loyal angels, trying to disrupt the forces that kept the heavens in balance.

After the rebel angels were defeated by Archangel Michael and his followers, Amy was cast out. He lost his bright, angelic form but retained his intelligence and control over thirty-six groups of lesser spirits.

Unlike many others, Amy is known for his strong belief in his own ability to be redeemed. He claimed that after 1,200 years of exile, he would be allowed to return to the Seventh Throne, though later demonologists doubted this story.

The Three Magical Books of Solomon

The Binding of the 72 Spirits

The most important event for Amy on earth happened during King Solomon’s reign. In the myths about Solomon, he tried to bring all earthly and spiritual power under his control.

With a magical ring given to him by the heavens, Solomon called forth the seventy-two main spirits of the Goetia, including Amy. The ‘Binding’ was a detailed ritual where each demon had to promise to serve and was then locked inside a large brass vessel.

During this event, Amy acted as a reluctant advisor and watched over hidden energies in the earth. While he was bound, he had to show Solomon’s court where ancient treasures were and share secrets about the stars. The binding both prevented these spirits from causing chaos and used their knowledge to help build the Temple and enrich the kingdom.

The imprisonment ended when the vessel was taken to Babylon and thrown into a deep lake. Hoping to find gold, local Babylonians found the vessel and broke its seals. This freed Amy and his followers, but the way he was bound set the pattern for later goetic rituals. Because Solomon had bound him, Amy’s spirit could be reached by anyone using the right Solomonic symbols.

The Evolution of the Classification

The way Amy was described changed a lot during the late medieval and Renaissance times. He moved from being part of oral stories to being written about in academic works, starting with Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1577).

Weyer, a doctor, wanted to organize demons into a structured system rather than seeing them merely as monsters from stories. He was the first to clearly list Amy’s rank as a Great President and describe his main roles: teaching the liberal sciences and helping to find treasures.

After Weyer, Reginald Scot included Amy in his book The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584). Scot’s work helped explain these ideas in plain English, making Amy less mysterious and showing that his main danger was the impressive knowledge he offered, which could tempt scholars into pride.

In the 17th century, the Ars Goetia gave more details about Amy, including the special symbol (the ‘Seal of Amy’) needed to summon him. In the 19th century, Jacques Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal added pictures, making Amy’s two forms—flame and man—well known in Western occult tradition.

Over the centuries, stories about Amy changed. He went from being seen as a cosmic rebel to a classic example of a ‘Dark Academy’ spirit, showing the risks of mixing human curiosity with forbidden spiritual help.

Powers

Amy influences both knowledge and material things by giving out special information and revealing hidden treasures. His main power is to ‘enlighten’ people’s minds about the liberal sciences, especially astrology. He doesn’t just give facts—he changes how people think, helping them understand complex ideas and making them stand out in these areas.

Amy can also command spirits that guard hidden treasures. He uses this power to make these guardians give up their hold, letting people find wealth that would otherwise stay hidden. Another ability he has is giving out ‘familiars’—lesser spirits who serve as helpers or spies for humans.

By giving his power to these familiars, Amy allows practitioners to maintain a steady supernatural influence in their lives without having to perform rituals constantly.
