Baphomet is a well-known symbol in Western occult and esoteric traditions. It first became famous during the 13th-century trials of the Knights Templar. The demon was reimagined in the 19th century as a key icon in ceremonial magic.

Description

Baphomet acts as a bridge between the divine and the earthly, showing how opposites can come together. It is a symbol of the “Great Work” in alchemy, in which pairs such as male and female, light and dark, and animal and human are joined into one being.

In theology, Baphomet represents the “Astral Light,” or the life force of the universe. It is not seen as evil in the usual sense, but as a symbol of all existence and the search for hidden knowledge. Baphomet is a symbol for those who want to understand the secrets of nature and themselves beyond normal ideas of right and wrong.

Appearance

Baphomet is most often shown with the head of a goat, usually a Gallic or Sabbatic goat, with big horns and a flaming torch between them. The body is human and has both male and female features, such as breasts and a staff called a caduceus in its lap.

Baphomet has two large, feathered wings on its back and is usually shown sitting on a cube or globe. One arm points up to a white crescent moon, and the other points down to a black crescent moon.

The words “SOLVE” (dissolve) and “COAGULA” (join together) are written on its forearms. Its feet are often hooves or shown crossed.

History

Origins

The name Baphomet first appeared in 1098 in a letter from the crusader Anselm of Ribemont. During the Siege of Antioch, Anselm wrote that the enemy forces “called loudly upon Baphomet.”

Most language historians believe the word came from a Middle French version of “Mahomet,” the Old French name for the Prophet Muhammad. At that time, Baphomet was not seen as a demon or goat-headed entity, but as a mistaken term showing how medieval Christians misunderstood Islamic beliefs and wrongly thought they worshipped idols.

The Trial of the Templars

In 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar. To take their wealth and end the Order, he accused them of over 100 acts of heresy, including worshipping an idol called Baphomet. During the Inquisition trials, people gave very different descriptions of this idol.

Some knights, while being tortured, described the idol as a severed human head, a cat, or a wooden bust with three faces. There is no record of the Templars calling it a goat-headed creature. Instead, the “head” was usually linked to a reliquary or a symbol of the Order’s secret savior.

After Grand Master Jacques de Molay was executed in 1314, the name Baphomet was mostly forgotten for hundreds of years.

The Occult Synthesis of Éliphas Lévi

The modern image of Baphomet was created in 1854 by French occultist Éliphas Lévi in his book Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie.

Lévi turned the unclear Templar “head” into the “Sabbatic Goat,” a detailed symbol of the Great Work in alchemy. He combined myths such as the Egyptian Goat of Mendes and the Greek god Pan to create a monster that symbolizes the balance of opposites.

Lévi put the Latin words “SOLVE” and “COAGULA” on Baphomet’s arms to show the alchemical ideas of breaking apart and joining together. His version of Baphomet was meant to represent everything in the universe, showing the unity of the material and the spiritual, the male and the female, and the human and the animal.

The Thelemic Expansion

In the early 1900s, Aleister Crowley made Baphomet a central symbol in his philosophy, Thelema. Crowley saw Baphomet as the “divine androgyne” and the “hieroglyph of arcane perfection.” As Grand Master of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), he even used “Baphomet” as his magical name.

In his “Gnostic Mass,” Crowley placed Baphomet at the center, showing the union of the Phallus and the Kteis. He saw Baphomet as a symbolic god of creative power, focusing on sex magic as a way to reach spiritual enlightenment and discover one’s “True Will.”

Modern Satanic Practice and Political Activism

In the mid-1900s, Baphomet became a worldwide symbol of organized Satanism. In 1966, Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan. He chose the “Sigil of Baphomet”—a goat’s head within an inverted pentagram—as its primary symbol.

This design came from an earlier picture in Maurice Bessy’s A Pictorial History of Magic and the Supernatural. Here, Baphomet symbolizes human desires, the enjoyment of life, and the rejection of spiritual hypocrisy.

In the 2000s, the Satanic Temple (TST) gave Baphomet a new role by using a large bronze statue for political and social causes. Revealed in 2015, the TST Baphomet shows two children looking up at the seated entity, highlighting ideas like empathy, kindness, and personal freedom.

Today, Baphomet is often the focus of rituals like the “Black Mass” and Left-Hand Path meditations. It is a symbol of rebellion against unjust authority and protects those who seek hidden or forbidden knowledge.

Powers

Baphomet’s powers are mainly about controlling “Astral Light” and sharing hidden knowledge. It does not cause physical harm but instead influences people’s minds, either by enlightening or corrupting them.

By helping opposites come together, Baphomet lets followers go beyond normal human limits and see the universe as a whole. This involves breaking down the ego (Solve) and then rebuilding the self into a stronger, wiser state (Coagula).

Baphomet is also said to balance opposing energies. In occult practice, calling on Baphomet is thought to help people control both their physical desires and spiritual goals at the same time.

Baphomet is believed to connect the everyday world with the magical, helping people turn their will into reality. As a channel for universal life force, Baphomet can help someone gain personal power or discover secrets that are hidden from most people.
